BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) – Two grants are boosting a police department’s ability to protect its city.

Wednesday, the Booneville Police Department announced that it has been granted about $965,000.

The funding comes from two separate grant programs, one through the federal COPS Grant and the other through the LEO Grant.

The two grants combined will help the department purchase and upgrade essential law enforcement equipment. This includes police vehicles, weapons, computers, body armor, and other equipment.

A portion of it will also be used for active shooter response equipment and training for School Resource Officers serving Booneville schools.

The COPS Grant is entirely federally funded with no local match required.

The LEO Grant is a 50/50 state matching grant.

“Our first responsibility is to protect and serve the citizens of Booneville, and that includes doing everything within our ability to protect our children, teachers, and school personnel. Making sure our officers and School Resource Officers have the proper equipment and training to respond to an emergency is a responsibility we take very seriously.”

Police Chief Michael Ramey.
