ABERDEEN, Miss. (WTVA) — Students at Belle-Shivers Middle School in Aberdeen commemorated the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with a special tribute on Friday.

The Freedom Flag Foundation selected the Junior ROTC class to fly the Freedom flag in front of the school.

Belle-Shivers is the first school in Mississippi to fly that flag.

The ceremony also featured a piece of one of the beams from the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

Instructor Major Allen Williams said it is an honor to pass on history to the younger generation.

"We have the opportunity to educate students that...weren't even born," said Williams. "It's phenomenal."

The piece of the World Trade Center will remain at the school until another school is selected to house it next year.
