MHP investigated six fatalities during Labor Day weekend

JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - Mississippi state troopers made 186 DUI arrests and investigated six fatalities during the Labor Day weekend.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol began its holiday enforcement period on Friday and it ended Monday night.

During this time, troopers issued 6,635 citations, including 330 seatbelt violations and 113 child restraint violations.

They investigated 146 crashes, which resulted in 54 injuries and six deaths.

Thirteen crashes happened in the Troop F district, which is comprised of Pontotoc, Lee, Itawamba, Union, Prentiss, Tippah, Benton, Alcorn and Tishomingo counties.

Eleven crashes happened in the Troop G district, which is comprised of Monroe, Chickasaw, Calhoun, Webster, Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee, Winston, Choctaw, Webster and Oktibbeha counties.

Two people died as a result of a crash Saturday afternoon in Grenada County. The crash happened at the intersection of Mississippi Highway 7 and County Road 333. The wreck killed Ladarrius Campbell, 21, of Grenada. The second victim, 3-year-old Janie Branch of Holly Springs, later died at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

The next two deaths happened Sunday morning in Tunica County. The final two deaths happened Monday evening in Lincoln County.

During the 2020 Labor Day holiday, MHP investigated 121 crashes, seven fatalities and made 184 DUI arrests.
