the state community college football season has kicked off. icc was looking to defeat pearl river for the fourth straight year. the indians' previous three wins in this series have all been close and high scoring. to fulton we go. sean cannon's team trailing, 7-6, in the second quarter. but his defense playing well. wildcats are driving, but itawamba ahs product jamal shumpert comes up with the fumble recovery, stopping that drive. these ladies thought that was a nice play. later, pearl river driving again....but terrance humphrey is picked off by sylvonta oliver.... that's a 50-yard pick six.... icc takes a 13-7 lead....and "chop nation" is fired up.... but with less than a minute to go in the first half, one more drive for pearl river.... fourth and two on icc's 29.... humphrey finds harrison ashby for the touchdown.... 14-13, pearl river at halftime. wildcats got a touchdown with sixteen seconds left to win, 35-31. icc visits east central next week. northeast is also opening with a team that it faced to start last season. southwest rallied to defeat the tigers in summit in 2018. northeast is getting some votes in the preseason national poll. to tiger stadium we go, where it was military appreciation night. cheerleaders ready to go. early in the first northeast freshman qb jack mangel scrambles and finds carson banks right outside the 10 yard line. the tiger will go for the field goal and kicker macjc all-state selection michael baugus boots the 28 yard field goal to put the tigers on the board. the corinth native gives northeast a three-nothing lead. three minutes left in the second quarter....shawn dalton weatherbee leaving the bears behind.... gets the crowd its feet with this 72 yard touchdown.... first career carry for the thrasher product. the tigers go up 10-0 to close out the first half... weatherbee's second touchdown gives northeast the win, 19-13, in overtime.... the tigers visit copiah-lincoln next thursday. defending national champion east mississippi visiting hinds. pretty big crowd at hinds to see the number one team in the country. emcc leading, 6-3, in the first half.... but the lions kick it to the wrong guy.... jakarius caston, the freshman from natchez, cuts it to the left side, goes up the sideline and has some blockers ahead of him.... cuts it back to the middle and just like that the eagles take the lead 10-6.... emcc getting to work quick though quarterback connor neville looks for open receivers and finds jontarious henderson, who breaks a tackle before scoring.... lions retake the lead, 13-10.... but emcc had trouble hanging on to the football at times.... and hinds scores the upset, 24-16. the lions see their seventeen-game winning streak snapped. northwest at east central. early in the first quarter, northwest's tyren irby with a strip sack.justin jackson would recover setting up the rangers in nice scoring position. jackson would recover setting up the rangers in nice scoring position. northwest quarterback jack walker shines in his debut, starting with a 30-yard td pass to braden smith. seven-nothing, rangers. later in the quarter, walker to smith again. "walker, northwest ranger" had three touchdown passes. quentin wilfawn leads the way on defense with fourteen tackles. northwest wins, 26-13. other scores. holmes at copiah-lincoln. jones at coahoma. and gulf coast at delta. there are a couple of area high school football games tonight. tishomingo county is hosting mcnairy central, tennessee. score. and in tippah county, it's the "joe bowl" as falkner hosts walnut. score. in softball, tupelo defeats smithville, 14-2, in five innings. houston defeats bruce, 11-10. p.j. cooper with a home run for the lady hilltoppers. that's sports. more
