just cant get away from it... and at mississippi state.... they have tried... from football to band practices... there's no getting around it... wtva's evan hensley joins us live with how the university is trying to "beat the heat" the famous maroon band will feature one of it's largest numbers ever with over 420 members... but there first challenge they must face is the heat they have been dealing with all week, here at band camp.... pkg (nat) junior drum major hunter harris says that the band camp is one of the highlights of the year... hunter harris - junior drum major "for me it is because i get to come back here and see all my friends who i haven't seen in months because i go back home during the summer. and then everyone comes back out here all 420 of us." harris who is from south carolina... says that they build there schedule to avoid some to peak heat hours in the afternoon... "we go inside and eat lunch and all that other stuff to be here when the sun is going down so we can work on drill and stuff like that." but despite it all... heat has been on the minds of everyone in the band.... it's been one of the hottest weeks of the summer... and they have had to deal with it first hand.... "there are a lot things that we can use to beat the heat and everything's. we have a cooling tent over by the tower we have been using and we have been using water cooler stations and everything and we have squad leaders constantly going around checking to see if anybody has water bottles and things like that so it's been good for the most part." "we have really encouraged sunscreen usage across everyone in the band, we make sure everybody has water. if someone doesn't have water we encourage them to go inside and get a bottle." the those drum majors have been encouraging members to focus on their part to keep them busy... "for a lack of better words its been hot. we have been trying not to say that word to make sure people are not constantly saying that with that being constantly on there minds." the band knows they are not done yet with two more days left before some much needed time inside... reporting live in starkvill eh wtva 9 news
