Friends remember jockey who died after crash

Joe Jernigan died on Thursday after suffering injuries in a horse race that happened at the Neshoba County Fair.

ahead.... but first, friends and family of a local horse jockey are remembering him after he passed away due to injuries received in a crash at the neshoba county fair... wtva's evan hensley spoke with them and joins us live in chickasaw county with their story. joe jernigan is a man that will never be forgotten of the members here at the pheba raing stables... they all say that he was bigger then life both on and off a horse... "joe jernigan was one of the best to ever sit on the back of a horse. i mean he rode the wind." jernigan lost his life a week ago at the neshoba county fair in a horse racing accident... but his memory will live on as the loving man he was... "to know joe was to love joe that's the best way to put it. you never saw him when he wasn't happy and he always had a smile." "every-time you saw joe he was smiling. out of the 8,9, 10 years i knew him i never saw joe mad or talking bad about anyone." jernigan was a member of the pheba racing stables... who competed in the fair on a daily basis... the group has become as close as family... "he was very much so family. and he was a part of our family. h called me his adopted son. i'm going to miss joe till the day i pass away." jernigan was the start of the team... and he helped other learn to become great riders... "he was hard to beat, you weren't going to find a better rider. he was smarter then anybody he ride against and pretty much smaller." his friends all say that he had a one of a kind connection to all their horses... "we'd be sitting out here after cleaning the stalls and he'd be back there scratching and rubbing them. and jernigans funeral will be on sunday at the houston funeral home at 1 o-clock. reporting live in pheba eh wtva 9 news at , matt's here with a first
