council is putting the breaks on its public transit program. wtvas taylor smith attended the city council meeting this afternoon and joins us live with the latest on the public transportation-services i am sitting here on a bench downtown waiting for the bus... this is something many people will not have to do much longer the city is working on getting rid of bus stops all together sot: "we are getting rid of the fixed bus route and moving to an on-demand schedule..." the bus route schedule now was just not serving the community like it was planned to do... sot: "its a hit or miss with the fixed bus route schedule you have to make sure the bus is on time and wait out there. " those problems will be solved with curbside pick up sot: "they will not have to stand at a bus stop; it will come right to your home or business or wherever you are and drop you off right at the curb." bridge: when the bus comes to pick you up it will look pretty familiar that's because the buses are going to stay the same sot: "you may see a bus that can hold 18 people with just one or two people on it, but you will never see buses with noone on them." this new program is compatible to the paratransit tupelo has now... but this is available for anyone who needs it city- wide. you will no longer need to be qualified to ride. residents are ready to hop on board with this new idea sot: "i didn't have a car for a long time so to have public transportation or subway or whatever is helpful." sot: "i think it is great if it will meet the needs of the people of the community." the system does require you to schedule pick up 48 hours ahead of time but all pricing will remain the same needs of the people of the community." the system does require you to schedule pick up 48 hours ahead of time but all pricing will remain the same they plan on starting this the first of july live in tupelo taylor smith wtva nine news also at tonight's tupelo city council meeting... folks may be able to explore downtown tupelo by bicycle. the city is working with a company called..."king city cycles"... to provide seven different racks of bicycles... that can be rented using a cell-phone app. council members thought it would be a good idea.... since the downtown area is already set up with bike lanes... sot: "i thought we might be able to use a bike share program and when i thought about it and thought about naming it something elvis centric and putting it downtown near the fair park i thought it was a great idea." this proposal for the bicycles is in the permit process right now
