championships won't begin until wednesday. several area teams trying to punch their tickets to pearl. in class 5a, lafayette county had a one-nothing series lead over saltillo. as for game two. no score in the top of the first. the commodores are threatening with runners at first and second. wilson varner with a single to right center. ben harper rounds third to score. lafayette takes a one-nothing lead. saltillo responds in the bottom of the first. with a runner at third, charles miller grounds out to first. but it's enough to score drew capobianco and tie the game at one. in the bottom of the second, after evan mccarthy brings in the go-ahead run on another groundout, wesley mize gets a base hit to score drew medlock. tigers take a 3-1 lead after two innings. saltillo goes on to win, 4-1, to the tie the series. game three is tuesday at lafayette. north pontotoc is returning to the class 3a championship series after winning at booneville, 13-5. new hope is returning to the class 4a championship series after winning at pontotoc, 10-4. smithville is returning to the class 1a championship series after winning at west union, 10-3. and in 1a south half, hamilton defeats stringer 5-2, thanks to ten strikeouts from brady davis. game three of that series tuesday night at stringer. just one week remains in the regular school softball championships have resumed after a long weekend of rain. back on thursday, tishomingo county was three outs away from winning the first game of its class 4a series with newton county. instead, the lady cougars came back to win, 5-4. so the lady braves would need a win this afternoon at msu's nusz park to send the series to a third game. but they didn't get off to the start they would have liked. bottom of the first....newton county opens the scoring....shelby anderson with a base hit to right.... landree amis comes in to score....lady cougars with a one-nothing lead, and they weren't done.... brittany thomas with a base hit to left center..... katelyn gipson will score to make it two-nothing.... part of a five-run first inning for newton county.... it was eight-nothing in the sixth when the lady braves get untracked.... maddyx mcnatt with a triple to the wall in right.... katelin senter scores to make it 8-1.... tishomingo county never gave up, but newton county goes on to win its tenth state championship by the final score of 8-4 to sweep the series. gonna happen."
