the last 42 years, runners of all ages and abilities have gathered in downtown tupelo for the gum tree 10k. this year's race featured a new start time of 8 am.... new start time, same champion.... francis kamiri defended his gum-tree title with a time of 29 minutes and 41 seconds. kamiri is from homewood, alabama by way of kenya... gladys cheboi, also part of the kenya to homewood pipeline, won the women's division with a time of 36 minutes, 21 seconds.... jay piondexter of mickey, tennessee was the top wheelchair finisher... take a look at this... does runner number 1468 look familiar to you? she should. it's our very own taylor smith, who finished 5th in her age group. taylor ran cross country and track in high school. she tells me she did no extra training for this race... i think she can win it next year. taylor had a good time with her crew from the cornerstone church in tupelo. msu men's tennis locked in a tight match
