a developing story out of monroe county. an man is spending the holiday season behind bars after getting caught spending counterfeit money at stores across the county. wtvas taylor smith is live at the monroe county sheriffs department after speaking with local business and residents about how they feel about getting scammed emily, a lot of businesses and people i have spoke with say it has happened to them as well... but during the holidays fake cash tends to float around more than usual monroe county sheriff cecil cantrell just caught a man that had over sixteen hundred fake bills he was using... sot: " that's a lot of fake money to have who has that much that's a lot" -charles jones this is 28 year old billy jones who now sits at the monroe county detention center... sot: "i've heard it happen a lot... there's so much going on they do it too quick to check it" -maggie louis cantrell says he was spending the money at local business and walmarts in the area... he got away with spending 400 dollars until he was caught sot:"that's not right cuz now the money is going back around in the economy. once you spend it once you can't ever use it again." but fraud money doesn't just get passed around in stores sot: " i have people coming up to me all the time trying to give me a hundred dollar bill and want change for it... i know it's fake... you don't do it? nope never" sot: "if i go and give them the money then i'm going to jail and then what am i gonna tell them" cantrell says that jones has had a criminal past and he was charged with uttering forgery this is a good reminder for everyone to slow down.... mark their bills.... and hold them up to the light to make sure they are real live in monroe county taylor smith wtva nine news three different
