A growing trend of guns being spray painted to look like fake ones is growing, according to U.S. Marshals.

a trend of spray painting guns...now an arrest after one was seized here in tupelo. wtva's rebecca butcher joins us now with why it might be bing done and reaction from the community. we reported yesterday that this is a growing trend according to u.s. marshals. during a month-long operation, someone here in tupelo was arrested for spray painting a gun white...tonight we looked into why it may have been done in the first place. or somebody else's this gun was seized back in august, when jaquarious cherry was taken into custody. tupelo police surrounded the home where the 17-year-oldwas in tupelo...then taking him in. buck fisher, tupelo resident "it looks real and they painted it, they shouldn't be doing that. it's been a big problem in our area." cherry was arrested during operation triple beam...during it, police chief bart aguirre says suspects taken into custody claimed gang affiliations. mike quarles,u.s. marshalsgulf coast regional task force commander "this particular gun was spray-painted white. it's hard to detect as well, if it's white it blends in a little better." rondarrian ward, now dead after being shot and killed at his grandmother's...was arrested with cherry back in the summer of 17..according to reports. we found this on facebook...a glock painted red dedicated to him...other posts, he was tagged in include the hashtag ll9. ((video))..a street gang...other graffiti wtva spotted was for the gangster disciples. willie topp, lives in tupelo "you see gang signs and graffiti here on some walls, so you need to be aware of your surroundings." a source tells me that guns are painted for territory...in case there's a crime committed and a gun is lying around. ...when an officer is deciding on if you're a threat, a painted gun only adds confusion. fisher: "he has a split second to make a decision. it could be his life or somebody else's." cherry is being held for now in the lee county jail. stay with us as more develops in cases like these. emily?
