mississippi state began sec play tonight at kentucky. the bulldogs have won 8 of the last 9 meetings against their sec east rival. a little brew-ha-ha before the game. jeffrey simmons and benny snell getting into it. a sloppy track in lexington... the bulldogs strike first. nick fitzgerald runs it in from a yard out.... kentucky would answer right before halftime... benny snell runs it in from two yards out... cats and dogs tied at 7 at the break... midway thru the 3rd.......still tied at 7.....snell takes the direct snap and scores from a yard out... uk led 14-7 after three... snell talked the talk all week, and tonight he walked the walk.. one play after a nick fitzgerald interception, snell takes it 36 yards to the house. snell finishes with 165 rushing yards, and all four kentucky touchdows as the wildcats down msu 28-7. all week long, ole miss head coach matt luke said it was important that the rebels didn't let the alabama game beat them twice. meaning, he didn't want a poor performance to carry over into the next game. the rebels looked to bounce back against nick saban's alma mater, kent state. rebs strike early. jordan ta'amu flips one to scottie phillips... scottie knows... 38 yards later, phillips finds the end zone. roughly 4 minutes into the contest, ole miss takes the 7-0 lead. the much-maligned land shark defense had its moments in the first half... winters is coming. markel winters finishes off kent state qb woody barrett for the sack... this one tied at 7 at the break. the start of the third quarter was delayed a couple times by the weather. when play resumed, ole miss wastes little time. opening drive of the 3rd quarter, ta'amu finds a.j. brown for a big completion down to the kent state two. scottie phillips punches it in to give the rebels a 14-7 lead. kent state responds with a field goal... then the nasty wide outs take over... d.k. metcalf with a one-handed td grab from 41 yards out... ole miss wins this one 38-17. after the game, matt luke talked about handling the long lightning delays. matt luke: "the first was halftime, so we just used it to talk about adjustments, the second one was really long, we got them some food, amde sure they were really relaxed, just stayed in the halftime locker room, just let them get comfortable, but that second one was a bit long, but overall, proud of the way they handled that last nine minutes, as a coach, you're worried that they'll lose their focus, but they went in and punched it in." number 1 alabama hosted texas a m. opening possession for the crimson tide... shades of the title game... tua winds up and finds a diving devontay smith for 6. same guy who caught the game winner against georgia... maybe even the same play call... aggies answer with a touchdown to tie it at 7. then tua caps off a td drive with a one yard run... all bama after that. crimson tide down texas a m 45-23. southern miss hosted rice. what a night for jack abraham. the former oxford charger connects with jordan mitchell for a 49 yard gain down to the rice 15... two plays later abraham avoids the rush and finds tez parks.. parks scores, and the golden eagles take a 17-8 lead. usm wins 40-22. abraham finishes with 428 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. there was some high school football played this afternoon. four games in total, three of them featuring area teams. oxford pummels southaven 30 to 7 in their 1-6a opener. holly springs blanks tishomingo county 47-0. north panola waxes memphis mitchell 46-zip. to major league baseball, where the atlanta braves could clinch the nl east with a win over the philadelphia phillies. bottom 2, freddie freeman lines a base hit into center field.... ronald acuna, ender inciarte score, and the bravos jump out to a 4 nothing lead. top 9, arodys vizcaino on to close it.... my-kell franco flies out to left... braves win 5-3. atlanta wins the nl east for the first time since 2013. chop-tober is back. kyle busch
