after 54 holes at the north mississippi classic from the country club of oxford, eric axley held a three shot lead over willy wilcox, sebastian munoz, and k.h. lee.... tournament officials knew sunday could be a wash-out, so they had a contingency plan... players teed off early, played in threesomes, and utilized split tees.... but, mother nature rarely loses. the final group got thru three holes before play was suspended at around10:40 this morning.... shortly before 3 pm, the final round was officially cancelled.... that meant 54 hole leader eric axley was deemed the winner of the inaugural north mississippi classic... axley, who turns 44 today, received the championship trophy and a giant check for 99,000 dollars thisis axley's first win on the web.com tour since 2005, and his first professional win since the 2006 valero texas open on the pga tour... willy wilcox, sebastian munoz, and k.h. lee all finished tied for 2nd at 9 under par... ole miss junior braden thornberry officially finishes tied for 22nd at 3 under... axley, who lives in knoxville, tennessee, says he approached his 3rd round on saturday knowing it could be the final round.... eric axley: "we looked at the forecast and knew they had moved final-round tee times up, and this isn't our first rodeo so we thought that there may be a chance that we didn't play today. our goal yesterday was to play like it was the final round and we went out and played well, and it ends up it was the final round, so we got the win." eric axley's lone win on the pga tour came at the 2006 valero texas open in san antonio.... as fate would have it, that's where the tour was this week... 54-hole co-leader andrew landry birdied 4 of his first 6 holes and finished 17 under par... the 30 year old landry won his first pga tour event by 2 shots over sean o'hair and trey mullinax... switching gears to football! mississippi state concluded spring practice with yesterday's maroon and white game. the maroon squad defeated the white team 28-10 in front of a record 36,789 fans at davis wade stadium. sophomore running back kylin hill had 99 all purpose yards and three touchdowns... keytaon thompson played quarterback for both teams and totaled 316 passing yards and 1 touchdown... quarterback nick fitzgerald and linebacker gary green were elected team captains for the upcoming season. after the maroon and white game, head coach joe moorhead assessed his first spring at mississippi state... joe moorhead: "you know, we wanted to come out, and we talk about our spring goals, and we wanted to make sure we were teaching the offense, defense, and special teams, the kids were retaining the information, coming out on a daily basis and giving great effort, and we were executing, and we were improving every day, and i think we've done that, there was another kind of snapshot or microcosm of our spring today, that there was great effort, there were a bunch of good things, but, many things to clean up, which is to be expected." keytaon thompson: "i think the team did really well, you know, it was a great atmosphere out here today, i'd like to thank the fans that came out to show their support, it looked crowded out here, you know, i think it was a great atmosphere and the team performed well under the new system." spring ball also in the books at alabama. the crimson team defeated the white squad 24-12 in saturday's 'a- day' game at bryant-denny stadium. facing the 2nd team defense, red-shirt freshman quarterback mac jones threw for 289 yards, 2 tds and one interception. against the first team defense, jalen hurts passed for 195 yards, no touchdowns and 1 interception. tua tongavailoa didn't play as he's still nursing a hand injury.... after the game, nick saban assessed alabama's spring. nick saban: 'i think all in all, we made a lot of progress this spring. i'm pleased with the progress we made a lot of positions in terms of player improvement. i'm not necessarily satisfied with where we are not should i think anybody on our team should be satisfied with where we are.' let's talk some baseball. mississippi state is flying high after their super bulldog mississippi state is flying high after their super bulldog weekend sweep of number 3 arkansas... the bulldog bats came alive to the tune of 18 runs and 28 hits! msu faces ole miss tuesday in pearl and then returns home to host texas a m next friday, saturday, and sunday. ole miss swept saturday's double-header against georgia to win the series... the rebels improved to 32-9 on the season with the two victories.... ryan olenek hit safely in all three games, extending his hitting streak to 19 games... ole miss squares off against msu tuesday night in pearl. the rebs return to swayze for a thursday, friday, saturday series against lsu.. just look how tight the sec west standings are with 4 weeks left in the regular season... ole miss and arkansas are tied for first at 10-8. texas a m, auburn, and lsu are all just one game back at 9-9.. check this out! mississippi state is just two games back. the bulldogs sit at 8-10... alabama is in the cellar at 5-13... congrats to the icc softball team. the indians clinched the macjc regular season championship following saturdays sweep at meridian community college. icc finishes conference play with a record of 26-2. the indians host southwest tennessee community college tuesday to close out the regular season. the macjc playoffs begin on friday... andy kirk: 'we played with a lot of heart and i think that's what our alumni's most proud of, that's what i'm most proud of as a coach and i think our institution is most proud of is just that we have, these kids play so hard, and they do things the right way.' the northeast softball team has also qualified for the macjc playoffs.... finally, congrats to all our area powerlifting state champions. north pontotoc wins 3a boys. pontotoc wins 4a boys... east union wins class 1 girls.... the lady urchinsset an all time points total...
