kentucky goes on to win 81-71... the crimson tide visit number 10 auburn wednesday night.... perhaps the tigers were looking ahead to that wednesday night showdown with alabama.... bruce pearl's club came out flat at south carolina.... the gamecocks opened up a 33 to 11 first half lead after this justin minaya lay-up... south carolina led 46-25 at the half.... but, auburn made it a game in the 2nd half... the tigers cut the deficit to 8 after desean murray gets rebound, hoop, and harm... auburn would get as close as 5 points before south carolina surges late to win 84-75.... our last two area high school basketball division champions were crowned tonight in senatobia.... ingomar earned the sweep in division 1-2a... the lady falcons downed new site 52-32... the ingomar boys topped walnut 72-43... a pair of area boys soccer teams competed for state championships today.... amory came oh so close to capturing that elusive state title, but the panthers fell to st. stanislaus 1-nil... saltillo defeated long beach 3-1 to win the 5a championship, the first state title in school history... switching gears to baseball.... mississippi state opened the 2018 season friday afternoon with an 11-0 loss at southern miss... but, as i always say, the best thing about baseball is that you usually get to play 'em again the next day.... diamond dawgs trying to split the series.... pick it up in the top of the 6th inning..... msu trailing 5-2.... hunter vansau tries to stretch a double into a triple and he's gunned down at 3rd.... 9th inning.... bulldogs trailing 7-3.... justin foscue drives in tanner allen on a sacrifice fly to center.... msu down 7 to 4.... matt wallner makes a diving catch to rob jake mangum of a hit and end the ballgame... southern miss holds on for a 7-4 win... the series finale begins sunday at 1 pm.... in oxford, ole miss defeated winthrop 8-1... the start of that game was delayed until 6 o'clock... the rebels go for the sweep beginning at 12:30 tomorrow... the bigger than ball foundation hosted a speaker's series today at the orchard church in tupelo... bigger than ball is the foundation started by tcps head baseball coach will lowrey... bigger than ball describes itself as a network of coaches using our sports platform to create positive change.... one of today's speakers was derek jones.... jones is a former ole miss defensive back who has been on david cutcliffe's staff at duke since 2008.... jones, whoserves asduke's defensive backs coach, was recently named associate head coach for the blue devils... jones says david cutcliffe has had an immense impact on his life.... derek jones: 'well coach cutcliffe ties in to exaclty what i'm talking about. he's a guy that i met at a very early age in my life. he gave me his first job as a football coach back in 1998, i think it was at ole miss as a graduate assistant. he taught me a lot of valuable lessons about manhood. i've had multiple chances to leave duke university, but when you work for a guy that teaches you something everyday that you know you're gonna be a better man as a result of working with and working for, it's kind of hard to look at the grass anywhere else and feel like it's greener.' there's a look at sports, we're back after
