JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - Since late-December, 18 inmates have died in state prisons across Mississippi.
Starting Wednesday, WTVA anchor Emily Leonard will dive deeper into our prisons – from the climbing inmate death toll to under-funding, under-staffing, overpopulation, gang violence, lawsuits, and living conditions. She’ll also talk with former inmates.
This special “Pressure on Prisons” will air every Wednesday night at 6:00 on WTVA 9 News.
December 29 - Terrandance Dobbins died in what the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) called a major disturbance at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Green County.
Late-night December 31 – A riot among inmates happened at the State Penitentiary at Parchman. Inmate Walter Gates was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. The coroner said he suffered multiple stab wounds, possibly from a shank.
January 2 – A fight at the Regional Correctional Facility in Chickasaw County Gregory left Emary dead.
January 2 – Parchman inmate Roosevelt Holliman was stabbed multiple times during a gang-related riot.
January 3 – Denorris Howell died after a fight in his cell at Parchman. He died from neck injuries.
January 8 – A.D. Mills, a Parchman inmate, died of natural causes at a hospital in Clarksdale.
January 13 – Jerry Williams, the second in command at MDOC, said he would retire two days later.
January 16 – Newly-elected Gov. Tate Reeves announced he named Tommy Taylor to serve as MDOC’s interim commissioner.
January 20 – James Talley and Timothy Hudspeth suffered fatal injuries during a fight at Parchman.
January 22 – Thomas Lee was found dead from an apparent suicide at Parchman.
January 25 – Jermaine Tyler was found unresponsive in his unit at the privately-operated Marshall County Correctional Facility. There were no initial signs of foul play, according to the private company, Management & Training Corporation.
January 30 - Nora Ducksworth died at the Marshall County Correctional Facility. A spokesman for the prison’s operating company said no foul play was suspected in the death.
February 1 - Jesus Garcia died at the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility. A spokesperson for the private-operated prison said there were no obvious signs of assault.
February 10 – James Brown died at the hospital at Parchman. No foul play was suspected in the death.
February 16 – David May was found unresponsive in his cell at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County. There were no obvious signs of injuries, per MDOC.
