Mississippi lawmakers officially removed the state's longtime flag in late-June. The longtime flag featured a Confederate battle emblem.

As agreed upon by lawmakers, the state's new flag must feature the phrase "In God We Trust."

A nine-member commission will select a design and Mississippi voters will either approve or vote against the design in November.

If the chosen design does not receive majority approval, the commission will present another design for a later vote. The process will repeat until a design receives majority approval.

Each member of the commission will choose 25 designs by Aug. 7. Members will then rank their top 10 choices.

During the next meeting on Aug. 14, the commissioners will select five flags for final consideration. The five flags will be placed on the MDAH website for public comment.
