SPRINGVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Department of Corrections says a state prison inmate has died following an altercation with another prisoner.
Corrections officials say St. Clair County Correctional Facility inmate Dexter Freeman died Monday from injuries sustained during the “inmate-on-inmate assault” at the Springville prison.
The department says an autopsy is set to be performed to determine the 38-year-old's cause of death.
No additional details have been released and the other inmate allegedly involved in the attack hasn't been identified.
Corrections spokeswoman Samantha Rose said the incident is being “thoroughly investigated.”
Freeman was serving a 15-year sentence for first-degree sodomy.
