MONTICELLO, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi woman has died after she ran back into her burning home to try to rescue her two dogs.
Firefighters were called to a home in Monticello early Wednesday and found the body of 72-year-old MaryAnn McMahon.
Her daughter, Amy Rutland, was taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
Lawrence County Sheriff Lessie Butler told news outlets Rutland was staying with her mother after her husband was buried Jan. 10.
County Fire Coordinator Lyle Berard says the women escaped the fire, but McMahon went back to try to save her pets. Butler says the McMahon's two dogs were found dead in the home.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
McMahon's body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy.
