HAMILTON, Miss. (WTVA) - Many people across the state dealt with power outages or loss of water because of last week's winter storm.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has begun the process of reviewing the infrastructure of utility departments across the state to ensure future weather events don't disrupt much-needed services.

Northern Commissioner Brandon Presley said the PSC is focused on electricity, gas and water.

"The public has a right to know the lights will be on when you need them; the heat will be on when you need it," he said.

Mississippi is well prepared for tornados and hurricanes, Presley added, but the extreme cold weather is not the norm.

"We have to work with our utility providers; we want to understand better the lessons they have learned."

Presley said the state’s utility workers performed great during the storm and does not want to experience the issues Texans faced last week. 

This process could take months to complete to ensure all data has been reviewed.
