JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reported 894 new COVID-19 cases and 27 new deaths Thursday, Aug. 20.
MSDH updates its case totals each morning based on test results from the previous day.

New COVID-19-related deaths reported to MSDH as of 6 p.m. Wednesday:

- Desoto - 2
- George - 1
- Harrison - 1
- Hinds - 1
- Jackson - 2
- Jones - 1
- Lafayette - 1
- Lauderdale - 1
- Lawrence - 1
- Lee - 1
- Madison - 2
- Monroe - 1
- Oktibbeha - 2
- Panola - 1
- Washington - 4
- Yazoo - 2
Two confirmed COVID-19 related deaths occurred between July 24 and August 9, identified from death certificate reports. The additional deaths were reported in the following counties:
- Perry - 1
- Washington - 1
As of Thursday, Aug. 20, there have been 75,449 total cases of the virus since mid-March, which is when the state reported its first case. There have been 2,190 total deaths.
The state health department estimates there have been 56,577 recoveries. The MSDH usually updates its estimated recoveries total once a week.
