JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - State troopers investigated two fatalities and 50 injuries during the Fourth of July holiday enforcement period.
The period began Friday and ended on Monday. During this period, the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) used all available troopers to combat speeding and remove impaired drivers from roadways.
During this year’s period, MHP issued 6,140 and made 146 DUI arrests.
Troopers investigated 151 crashes.
The first fatal wreck happened on Sunday, July 4 on U.S. Highway 61 in DeSoto County.
The second fatal wreck happened early Monday morning on Mississippi Highway 373 in Lowndes County. According to MHP, a vehicle collided with Marquis Dixon, 31, of Columbus, who was riding a scooter. He died at the scene.
Troop F made 40 DUI arrests in its district, which includes Pontotoc, Lee, Itawamba, Union, Tippah, Prentiss, Benton, Alcorn and Tishomingo counties.
Troop G made 12 DUI arrests, which includes Calhoun, Chickasaw, Monroe, Clay, Webster, Oktibbeha, Lowndes, Choctaw, Winston and Noxubee counties.
Troop F recorded eight collisions and seven total injuries, and Troop G recorded six collisions and two total injuries.
