OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) — The coronavirus will not stop the playing of the 93rd Battle for the Golden Egg between Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

However, it will be a much smaller crowd than usual for the Egg Bowl at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium when the game kicks off at 3 p.m. because of attendance restrictions brought on by the pandemic.

The Rebels (3-4) will play host to the Bulldogs (2-5) with the visiting team still with a reducted roster.

Yahoo Sports reported Friday MSU will have 47 scholarship players for the Egg Bowl compared to the 43 available for last Saturday's game at Georgia. The SEC allows a team to not play if the roster is below 53 players.

For Ole Miss, it comes into the game with the SEC's top offense and top receiver in Elijah Moore.

Moore's end zone penalty in last year's game led to a missed extra point giving Mississippi State a 21-20 victory in Starkville.

The 2019 Egg Bowl was followed by the firings of both head coaches, moves that The Athletic reported this week affected the careers of about 300 coaching careers.

That included the hiring of Mike Leach at Mississippi State and Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss as the new leaders of their respective football programs.
