BUTLER, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama jail has been shut down because of unsafe conditions.

Choctaw County Sheriff Scott Lolley tells WTOK-TV that all 23 prisoners at the jail in Butler have been moved to the Clarke County jail in Grove Hill.

Choctaw County is located in west Alabama near the Mississippi line. Its jail was closed for renovations and plumbing repairs three years ago.

But Lolley says leaks that occurred over years caused the building's foundation to shift. He says a fire inspector found a door that was so bowed from water leaks that it couldn't be opened.

Lolley says he decided to close the jail for safety reasons. County commissioners are scheduled to discuss possible solutions during a meeting on Monday.
