MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Senate has rejected a proposal to start a lottery and allow multiple casinos.

The proposal fell two votes short of what was needed Tuesday to clear the Alabama Senate.

The proposal would have authorized a state lottery, multiple casinos locations plus a compact with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians for casino games at their three sites.

Senators voted 19-13 for the proposal.

It needed 21 votes to clear the Senate.

Over the past two decades, gambling legislation in Alabama has failed amid conservative opposition and a turf war over who could have electronic gambling machines or casino games.
