BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A federal judge has sentenced the father of a Huntsville elementary school student who found a gun hidden in their home, took it to school and accidentally shot himself in the hand while showing it to a friend.

U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town, in a news release Tuesday, said U.S. District Judge Karen O. Bowdre sentenced 41-year-old Letroy Cole Jr. to 2 years and 2 months in prison plus three years of supervised release.

Cole pleaded guilty in November to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, a Kel Tec model P-32 .32-caliber semi-automatic pistol. The gun was discovered to be stolen and traced back to Cole, who said he found it behind his Alabama apartment.

Town says the shooting could have ended much worse.
