DECATUR, Ala. (AP) — A judge has sentenced an Alabama man to life without parole in the killing of his roommate more than five years ago.
Circuit Judge Glenn Thompson handed down the sentence Wednesday to 29-year-old Charles Makekau during a hearing in Decatur.
News outlets report Makekau was convicted of murder in the killing of 21-year-old James "Jamie" Patrick Travers II. Two other men are already serving prison sentences in his death.
Evidence showed Makekau set up a home invasion that turned deadly.
Makekau apologized to Travers' family and told them that he has changed in the years since the crime. But the victim's mother, Rebecca Travers, called him a coward, liar and a con artist.
The judge said life without parole was appropriate sentence because of the "path of destruction" Makekau laid.
