On the news of starting against Stephen F. Austin…
"I found out on Friday, and I always have the mentality of being one play away. I went on with my day and continued to prepare for the game."
On approaching the game…
"You're always one game away, so you prepare like you're starting. My approach didn't change at all."
On starting last year's bowl game…
"That was great. I got some of the nerves out of the way after getting that first start in. It gives me a lot of confidence heading into week one of this year."
On the new offense…
"I feel like this offense gives us ample opportunities to make explosive plays. Its methodical with intricate detail, and it'll help us a lot in the long run."
On talking to Jalen Mayden…
"I've told him the same thing I've been telling him since he got here. I told him to work hard and get into the play book. He would have been two plays away. You need to play like you're starting no matter what. He's getting better and doing a great job with it
On improvements to his game…
"I've improved mostly on defensive recognition, fundamentals, throwing the ball and throwing mechanics."
On playing to win…
"We play against a championship standard. Each and every game, we play to the best of our ability. We won't try to beat Stephen F. Austin. We'll try to play to our championship standard."
On his personality on the field…
"I love football, and I've been playing it for a long time. I'm ready to open up out there. I feel different out there. It's a very good and fun environment playing football and getting to be out there with all the guys. It's a great experience."
On playing at home…
"Playing in Davis Wade is always a blast. It's week one, the season opener and a new coaching staff. I think it's going to be amazing."
On the wide receivers…
"They are great. They have the ability to make explosive plays for us. They've been running the ball well and running explosive routes. I think they've grow a lot since last year. The new guys will be really big for us this year."
On conversation with receivers…
"We've had the same conversations we've always had. We have a really close relationship between the quarterbacks, receivers, the offense and defense as well. We all just have a great relationship together. We're a family. They all have confidence in me like I have confidence in them."
On how explosive the offense can be…
"It'll be as explosive as we want it to be if we do our job. The coaches will put us in the position to make plays, and as long as we execute, we will be really explosive."
