SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - Smithville High School pitcher Jared Johnson was selected by the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Johnson was drafted in the 14th round as the 427th overall pick. He says he plans to sign with the Braves this weekend and move on to rookie ball.
The righthander led Smithville to the MHSAA Class 1A championship in May. He went 9-0 on the mound this season with a 0.68 ERA and 100 strikeouts. He also hit .480 with ten home runs and 27 RBI.
Johnson signed with Itawamba Community College in the fall and with Mississippi State in the spring.
