PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) - Dylan Gunter of Pontotoc says he was "shocked" and "truly amazed" when he won a grand national championship in turkey calling.
His family actually makes turkey calls, but Dylan, 19, has only been turkey calling for four years.
"We ended up getting a calling press to build our own calls," he said. "Once I figured things out, I started competing."
Dylan says he's been hunting his entire life, whether it's turkeys, squirrels, deer or rabbits.
"Hunting's not all about killing stuff, it's about spending time with your family and friends, and God's great outdoors," he said. "It's truly an amazing time, I wouldn't trade anything for the memories I've made in the woods with my family and friends."
This year's grand national championships were held in Nashville. Dylan won the intermediate division, which is ages 16-21.
Dylan had only placed first in one competition before capturing his national title, and he's already looking forward to defending his crown.
"I'm not perfect, I can always be better," he said. "I'm gonna try my best to get as good as I can be for next year, and hopefully, bring home another win next year."
