OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) - In April, former Oxford High basketball standout Jarkel Joiner announced he was coming home.

Joiner transferred to Ole Miss after two seasons playing for former Rebels head coach Rod Barnes at Cal State Bakersfield.

Joiner is keeping his game sharp by playing in the SB Fitness Summer League.  The SB Fitness Summer League is run by Tupelo native, and former Blue Mountain College standout, Shane Butler.

Joiner says he became a more polished basketball player at Bakersfield.

"I matured a lot," said Joiner.  "Coach Barnes taught me a lot, and I have so much respect for him and his coaching staff and the players he brought in.  Him, (Barnes) and the coaching staff, are hard-working guys, and they taught me a lot, especially on the defensive end.  I feel like my defense has gotten a lot better."
