OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Ole Miss men's basketball Twitter released a statement Tuesday saying that head coach Kermit Davis tested positive for the coronavirus.
The news comes just over a week before Ole Miss' opening game against Central Arkansas, which is scheduled to be next Wednesday at the Pavilion.
According to the statement, Davis went through the team's coronavirus protocol Monday and tested positive. He did go through testing again Tuesday and the results for that test are still pending.
The team is going through contact tracing right now and those in close contact with Davis will be required to quarantine.
Assistant Coach Ronnie Hamilton will be the interim head coach; however, Davis will be able to observe practices and communicate with the team virtually.
The game against Central Arkansas next week is part of the Justin Reed Classic where the Rebels will play three games in three days. Jackson State and Arkansas State are also playing.
As of right now, Ole Miss said it will have enough players to participate. We will have an update as the team completes its contact tracing and testing.
