NEW SITE, Miss. (WTVA) -- In basketball, a lay-up is two points, a free-throw, one point, and a three-pointer, well you guessed it, three points. New Site’s Hannah Campbell, she put in enough two-pointers, three-pointers, and free-throws enough times to amass 2,000 points, the first player in New Site history to achieve that feat.
"It felt great you know thinking about all the people that have played before me and to be up there with them, it’s a great accomplishment for me," Campbell said.
Campbell has racked up points ever since she started playing for New Site her freshman year. Head coach Byron Sparks said it’s a monumental achievement.
"We’ve had some really good teams here the last 10 or 15 years," Sparks said. "And had some really good players come through here that haven’t reached it, I’m just so proud of her."
Campbell’s teammates were almost, if not more excited as her that she got 2,000 according to teammate, friend, and fellow senior Ivy Loden.
"That was a great win for Hannah to be able to reach this goal with her because it just makes us feel more of a team," Loden said. "That’s what being a team is all about is celebrating with each other."
The Royals have six seniors this year and are 25-1, which is eerily similar to their record last year when they got bounced in the quarterfinals by Coahoma County. Now that 2,000 is in the bag, that is Campbell and New Site’s sole focus: a gold ball.
"I’ve been trying for four years now and we really think we have a big shot at it this year," Campbell said. "Everybody is so close and we want it so bad that’s the number one thing on our head right now is just to do everything for the state championship."
UPDATE: New Site's Lane Smith amassed 2,000 points first during her career from 1984-1987. She scored 2,097 total points.
