NETTLETON, Miss. (WTVA) - Nettleton High School's Nygil Owens signed with Belhaven University's football program on Thursday.
Owens didn't play football until two years ago, when he transferred from Tupelo. As a senior at Nettleton, Owens had 26 receptions for 445 yards and four touchdowns. As a defensive back, he had 49 tackles and four interceptions in two seasons.
"At first, it wasn't that hard of a transition, I did know I wanted to play basketball at first," Owens said. "But then, Coach Topps came in, he was like, 'let's just try you at football real fast', I started it, and eventually, that's what I'm going to do for the future."
"He started seeing potential during that first month being here, and then he just really bought into it," said Nettleton head football coach Ken Topps. "Just trying to get him to understand how athletic he really was, it was a confidence thing for him. Once he realized he had the ability to do it, he's just continued to grow."
Belhaven, located in Jackson, Miss., is an NAIA football program.
