PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) - Songwriter Jim Weatherly, 77, died in his home on Wednesday night, according to a family spokesperson.
Weatherly played quarterback for Ole Miss in the 1960s.

He helped lead the team to an undefeated season, the SEC championship and the national championship in 1962.
He was from Pontotoc.
After college, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he wrote some major hits such as "Midnight Train to Georgia."
U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss, released a statement Thursday.
“Gayle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of our friend Jim Weatherly. From his days as a quarterback at Pontotoc High School and Ole Miss, to his decades of writing chart topping hits across several different genres, he has always been a standout talent - a favorite son - of whom we could all be proud. My prayers are with his family and loved ones.”
Wicker is also a Pontotoc native.
