SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WTVA/MSU Athletics) – Quinndary Weatherspoon of the Mississippi State men’s basketball team was one of 20 players named to the prestigious Jerry West Award Watch List announced Tuesday by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Bulldogs have had a player represented on the West Award Watch List on two occasions under fourth-year head coach Ben Howland. The West Award is one of five pre-season honors presented by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The list includes the Bob Cousy, Jerry West, Julius Erving, Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar awards.
Weatherspoon fueled the Bulldogs with 14.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game last season. He has already secured a pre-season All-America Third-Team selection by Lindy’s Magazine. Weatherspoon amassed double figures in 30 of 37 games ignited by six 20-plus point performances.
By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2019 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2019 Jerry West Shooting Guard Award will be presented at The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles on Friday, April 12, 2019, along with the other four members of the Naismith Starting 5. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Point Guard Award, the Julius Erving Small Forward Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award. Broadcast information will be released at a later date.
Previous winners of the Jerry West Award include Carsen Edwards, Purdue (2018), Malik Monk, Kentucky (2017), Buddy Hield, Oklahoma (2016) and D'Angelo Russell, Ohio State (2015).
