STARKVILLE (MSU Athletics/WTVA) - One of the major storylines in college baseball during the 2019 season was the crop of talented freshman pitchers and Mississippi State freshman JT Ginn was a headliner in that group. For his efforts in 2019, Ginn earned Freshman All-America status from each of the five major reporting publications on college baseball, along with two national awards.

Perfect Game’s Co-National Freshman Pitcher of the Year and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s National Freshman of the Year, Ginn was the first MSU baseball student-athlete to earn a national freshman of the year honor in program history and is the 36th Diamond Dawg rookie to earn Freshman All-America honors.

The rookie right hander was named to the Freshman All-America team for Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, D1Baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Perfect Game. Of the publications that name multiple teams, Ginn was a first-team selection on each of those squads.

Only the second Diamond Dawg in program history to earn SEC Freshman of the Year, Ginn owned an 8-4 record and a 3.13 ERA in 17 starts. In 86 1/3 innings of work on the mound, he walked just 19 batters and of his 72 hits allowed, only 12 went for extra bases. He limited the opponent to just 35 runs – 30 earned – and a .220 batting average against.

An SEC All-Freshman Team selection, as well, Ginn tied the Mississippi State freshman record for pitching victories during the 2019 campaign, as his eight victories equaled the total by Paul Maholm (2001).

Ginn became just the second MSU freshman to eclipse the 100-stikeout mark in his start versus LSU at the SEC Tournament, joining Eric DuBose (109; 1995) as the only two rookies to reach the century mark. His 105 strikeouts rank No. 17 overall on the single-season charts at Mississippi State and were the second-highest total by a freshman in the NCAA in 2019.
