STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) — New Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach received a warm welcome from fans as school leaders formally introduced him on Friday.

Leach told reporters and the standing-room only crowd he should know after spring practice starts how well his team will adapt to his pass-oriented offense.

"We've always been able to install it fast," said Leach. "I don't think it'll be perfect within a week, but I think it'll be fairly sharp within two weeks."

The former Washington State and Texas Tech head coach mentioned former MSU football coach Jackie Sherill and former MSU baseball coach Ron Polk in referencing connections to Mississippi State.

Leach remembered a baseball playbook authored by Polk that helped influence how he does things today.

"I used what I learned out of that book in football over the years," said Leach. "His drills...had everybody going somewhere, everybody was doing something. At our football practices, we try to have constant motion."

One of the lighthearted moments in his news conference was his expressing disappointment that the worst visitors locker room he ever saw, which was at MSU years ago, no longer exists.

Mississippi State said it gave Leach a four-year deal that will pay a base annual salary of $5 million but also includes incentives.

His arrival in Starkville came with an additional cost, however. Washington State said Leach's buyout on the contract there is $2.25 million.
