STARKVILLE, Miss. (MSU Athletics/WTVA) - Mississippi State football captain and community service leader Gerri Green was honored Monday as the Wuerffel Trophy announced the senior defensive end a nominee for the 2018 award.

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. One of the top edge rushers on the squad, Green has been a standout within the Starkville community throughout his time as a Bulldog.

Green has been involved with community outreach since his freshman season, volunteering with projects like Read Across America and other individual mentoring and tutoring projects. Recently, Green has served as a mentor with Quad County Alternative School, heading tours of the football facilities on campus.

Despite balancing commitments of athletics and academics, Green still manages dedicate countless hours within the community and has spent time at Ward Stewart Elementary garden, local hospitals, escorting local elementary students to school and volunteering at MSU's youth football camps.

Green encourages other members of the football program to give back, and his efforts serve as an example of the character and leadership to underclassmen in the program. For his leadership, both on and off the field, Green was voted the defensive captain of the squad by his teammates earlier this year. For the second consecutive season, Green will also serve as a member of the Southeastern Conference Leadership Council.

The Greenville, Mississippi, native has started all seven games for the Bulldogs this season and has recorded 18 total tackles, including 4.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a national selection committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients.

Semifinalists for the Wuerffel Award will be announced on Nov. 1 and finalists will be announced on Nov. 19. The formal announcement of the 2018 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation's press conference in New York City on Dec. 4. The presentation of the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 50th All Sports Association Awards Banquet on Feb. 15, 2019 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
