STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA/MSU Athletics) - Off the heels of one of the best seasons in Mississippi State history and establishing himself as an All-American caliber kicker, sophomore Jace Christmann was tabbed to the Lou Groza Award Watch List, the organization announced on Wednesday.

Christmann appeared in all 13 games over his redshirt freshman season and served as MSU's primary place kicker for the final 11 contests. His impressive debut season allowed the Houston, Texas native to become the first place kicker in program history to earn a place on the Football Writers Association of American Freshman All-American Team and the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team.

Attempting the first field goals of his career against No. 11 LSU on Sept. 16, Christmann connected on 27-yard, 30-yard and 45-yard tries to become the first MSU kicker to make three field goals in a game since Devon Bell versus South Alabama on Sept. 22, 2012. Christmann's 45-yard field goal against the Tigers was the longest made by MSU all season.

Leading all SEC freshmen and ranking fourth overall in the league, Christmann held a .857 field goal percentage after going 12-for-14 on the season. He connected on nine of his first 10 field goal attempts, which matched the best start by an MSU kicker since Westin Graves opened the 2015 season hitting nine of his first 10 field goals. Christmann also connected on all 42 of his PAT attempts to rank fifth in MSU's single-season annals.

The Lou Groza Award will announce its 20 semifinalists on Thursday, Nov. 1. From this list, a panel of more than 300 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists and current NFL kickers select the top three finalists for the award by Tuesday, Nov. 20. That same group then selects the national winner, who will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 6 during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
