Blue Mountain, MUW split baseball doubleheader

The two teams will meet later this month in Blue Mountain.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA/BMC Athletics) - NCAA DIII's Mississippi University for Women used a three-run sixth inning to knock off Blue Mountain College 6-5 here Tuesday in Game 1.

The Toppers got all their runs in the opening inning with an RBI single by Deonteau Rieves (JR/Columbus, MS), a two-run double by Hayden Tapper (SR/Nesbit, MS), a sac-fly from Seth Cochran (SO/Lakeland, TN) and an RBI single by Nolan Stevens (SR/Bartlett, TN).

MUW answered in the second with a two-run double by Ford and an RBI by Suggs.

The Owls got three unanswered to win it in the sixth, capped by a bases-loaded walk that would eventually give them the victory.

Blake Sigrest (SO/Albany, LA) suffered the loss for BMC, going five innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits.

Williams was the winner for MUW, going seven innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits and striking out two.

The Toppers exacted revenge in the second game winning 5-4, led by a Latalo Newson (SR/Senatobia, MS)'s RBI double and solo home run.

Newson's heroics started in the first with an RBI double that drove in Zack Poteete (JR/Houston, MS).

In the sixth, Newson would hammer a solo homer, his third of the season.

The Toppers added insurance in the win in the sixth with a two-run single by Grayson Bowman (SR/Murfreesboro, TN) that scored Deonteau Rieves and Will Garriga (JR/Hurley, MS).

Blue Mountain sealed the deal in the seventh on an RBI single by Garriga.

Brandon Maxwell (JR/Florence, AL) picked up the pitching win out of the pen for BMC, tossing an inning with a strikeout.

The Toppers moved to 11-14, 3-3 SSAC on the season, while MUW is 8-4. The two teams will meet later this month in Blue Mountain.

BMC next returns to action Friday in SSAC action against No. 8 Middle Ga. St. in Cochran, Ga. at 3 and 5 p.m. The two teams will play Game 3 of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
