PEARL, Miss. (WTVA) - Jared Johnson's solo home run in the top of the seventh inning lifted Smithville to the MHSAA Class 1A baseball championship on Friday, as the Seminoles defeated Stringer 1-0.
Smithville (20-7) swept the series 2-0 after defeating the Red Devils 4-2 on Thursday.
"I just wanted to be big for my team. We had two outs but I was just wanting to put a good swing on it," Johnson said.
Layne Williams allowed just three hits to earn the win for the Seminoles, while Mitch Finn recorded the final out to pick up the save.
"Bottom line is our defense got us here," said Smithville head coach Jamie Russell. "My philosophy is defense wins championships. Everybody wants to hit, hit, hit, but (if) you can't catch it, you ain't got a chance."
The Seminoles had lost in the Class 1A finals the previous two seasons. Smithville's previous state baseball championship was in 2014.
