West Point police identify auto burglary suspect

WEST POINT, Miss. (WTVA) - West Point police are searching for a 22-year-old auto burglary suspect.

South Side Elementary is located on Union Drive in West Point.

Officer Kennedy Meaders said a school resource officer at South Side Elementary School reported someone jumped the school’s fence.

The officer captured a man trying to break into a car, Meaders said.

The officer was injured and the man escaped into the woods.

Police officers were at the school, he said.

According to the West Point Consolidated School District, police gave the all-clear and officers are no longer in the area. 

The school district said the school was never in threat. However, the school was placed on lockdown.

West Point police later identified the suspect.

Demarcus White, 22, of West Point, is wanted for auto burglary, which police clarified happened at Church Hill Elementary School.

Church Hill Elementary School is located on the same campus as South Side Elementary.

White is also wanted for simple assault on a police officer.
