TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton was in the nation’s capital to attend a ceremony at the White House honoring the city’s famous son Elvis Presley, among others.
Presley is posthumously receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“Tupelo is where a boy and his mother walked into a hardware store to buy a gun, came out with a guitar and went on to change the world of music forever,” Shelton stated.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor.
Other honorees include Hall of Fame baseball player Babe Ruth, late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach.
