TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — The coronavirus did not stop people in Tupelo from turning out on Memorial Day to honor those in the military who died while serving their country.
Dozens showed up at Veterans Park to find organizers had chairs spaced out enough where people could practice social distancing.
Volunteers also made face coverings that looked like the U.S. flag. people could wear for the ceremony.
"You have a lot of seniors, a lot of older people that come out here and participate in this program, and they’re in that vulnerable group. So we want to make ourselves safe for them,” said Tupelo Chief Operations Officer Don Lewis.
Mayor Jason Shelton joined military veterans in making remarks.
Shelton said people should follow the example of fallen soldiers and be brave during the pandemic.
