TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Tupelo Public School District has postponed open houses due to concerns over the increasing numbers of coronavirus cases in the state.
Spokesperson Gregg Ellis says an outbreak of the virus among the Tupelo High School band program also played a part in the decision.
The band posted on its website all activities scheduled for Friday were canceled due to the outbreak.
The post said parents would be notified should their child need to be tested or quarantined because of exposure to the virus.
Ellis says the district had been monitoring the increasing numbers in the state and made the decision to cancel open houses.
He says one reason behind the decision was to prevent the virus from spreading to teachers as the school year is getting ready to begin.
The district's first day for classes is Wednesday, August 4.
