TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - People from around Mississippi traveled to Gumtree Park Saturday for the Tupelo Police Department’s Career Day.
During the day, they filled out applications, met officers, and completed a physical training (PT) test.
The PT test involves pushups and a mile and a half run. An agility run is also a part of the test, but the ground was too slippery because of the rain.
Chief of police, Bart Aguirre, said they held a Carrer Day to promote the department and to help diversify it.
"This is why we held it kind of in this location here at gumtree park," he said. "In hopes we could attract more minority officers or potential officers.”
Michael Glaspie traveled from Calhoun County to participate in the tryouts. Glaspie said it means a lot to him that the department wants more minorities on its team.
"It shows that they are aware, concerned, and want more people to come in and tryout and be on the team," he said.
