TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Tupelo High School students will go to prom on Saturday, but THS' communications director Gregg Ellis said the event will be completely different from years prior.
Ellis said this year prom isn’t a school-sanctioned event, which means THS teachers and staff will not chaperon.
Instead, the Parent Teacher Organization is funding the event and has hired security for the prom, which was cancelled last year.
The Tupelo Police Department is aware the event is taking place, while parents have signed up to serve as chaperons in one-hour increments.
Ellis said up to 500 students are allowed to attend, but only 440 signed up. The PTO is encouraging students to wear face covering, but they aren’t required.
Ellis also said the prom will be inside Building 4 of the Tupelo Furniture Market because it's big enough for students to social distance.
