The Baldwyn School District released the following statement:

"With the recent tragic accident, Baldwyn School District will be offering counseling in partnership with the Family Resource Center, Region III, and local ministers on site throughout the rest of the school week. The safety of our students will continue to be our number one priority. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the family of this tragic accident," said Assistant Superintendent Raymond Craven.

Update 10/31/18 1:58 p.m.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol says the child involved in the crash has passed away. The child died from his injuries sustained in the crash.

Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green identifies the child as Dalen Thomas, 9.

When troopers arrived on the scene, it appeared the driver of a westbound pick-up truck struck the child as he crossed the road to get onto the school bus.

The crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Troopers say the child was a student at Baldwyn Elementary School.

Update 10/31/18 10:50 a.m.

The driver of the truck stayed on the scene while investigators continued to try and piece together what happened.

LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) - Law enforcement is at the scene of an accident involving a child getting on a school bus on Highway 370 at County Road 2578 in Lee County, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

The child was taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo with serious injuries, said Cpl. Jason Roe with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

The child has now been airlifted to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis with what MHP tells WTVA are life-threatening injuries.

"The bus was properly stopped when a truck hit the student," said Baldwyn School District Assistant Superintendent Raymond Craven. "We are asking for prayers for the family and for the school."

"We are working with law enforcement to investigate the accident. The safety of our students will always be the number one concern," said Baldwyn School District Superintendent Jason McKay.

At the time of the accident, four students were on the school bus, MHP said.

The assistant superintendent tells WTVA the school district made arrangements to get the other four students to school.

This is a developing story.
