TREMONT, Miss. (WTVA) - Parents involved in putting together a prom in Tremont say the flyer sent out to students was meant for crowd control, not to discriminate against same-sex couples.
The original form for the prom said that guests of the event must be of the opposite sex.
But a parent helping to put on that private prom tells us the language that was used was, in essence, a mistake.
He said in a Facebook post it was intended to limit the prom crowd since there were concerns students without dates were planning to buy tickets for random people.
That parent says the language had nothing to do with sexual preference and apologized for any hardship that language may have caused.
Meanwhile, Itawamba County Superintendent of Schools Trae Wiygul says a teacher is being investigated for sending the original form out.
That teacher is also a parent of one of the students.
The prom is being held by the parents because the school district does not sponsor or endorse proms.

TREMONT, Miss. (WTVA) - A prom invitation aimed at Tremont students states guests must be of the opposite sex.
The invitation, which was revealed on Facebook, is the topic of many people.
The prom is being hosted by parents and is not associated with the Itawamba County School District.
Superintendent of Education Trae Wiygul issued the following statement.
“The Itawamba County School District does not sponsor or endorse proms. If a prom is being held, it is a private affair hosted by parents. Since this matter allegedly concerns a parent, who is also a teacher, any activity that person may have done during school hours concerning a prom was outside the scope of employment and is being investigated.”
The prom has been scheduled to take place at the Tammy Wynette Facility on April 26.
The school district has dealt with a similar situation in 2010 when Constance McMillen, a student, was told her girlfriend wasn't allowed to attend prom at Itawamba AHS.
ICSD was later sued and the district settled with McMillen, agreeing to payment and the adoption of a sexual orientation non-discrimination policy.
