JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - State troopers reported three deaths during their Memorial Day enforcement period.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol’s enforcement period began Friday and concluded Monday.
During this time, troopers issued 5,734 citations and made 160 DUI arrests.
They investigated 104 crashes, three deaths and 40 injuries on the state’s highways and interstates.
MHP recorded two deaths during the same period in 2020.
The first death happened Friday afternoon when a vehicle struck and killed trooper John Harris in Madison County.
The second death happened Friday evening in Newton County, and the third death happened shortly before midnight Friday in Leake County.
Troopers made 45 DUI arrests in Troop F which covers Lee, Union, Pontotoc, Itawamba, Prentiss, Tippah, Benton, Alcorn and Tishomingo counties.
They made nine DUI arrests in Troop G which covers Monroe, Chickasaw, Calhoun, Webster, Clay, Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Choctaw, Winston and Noxubee counties.
Troopers recorded nine collisions in Troop F and 13 collisions in Troop G.
